Sorry for any confusion that was created in the shit storm yesterday. I really wanted to offer these in a way that gave as many interested people a chance at a set as possible, but things obviously didn’t go according to plan. At all. I pulled the auctions down, requested that the Nintendolife article be removed (thank you, Damien), and shelved the sets for the moment (don’t ask, they aren’t going anywhere right now).
I guess the idea of reproduction carts is far too offensive for some folks and many of them have proven themselves to be quite outspoken about their opinions. I have a really hard time understanding why something like this is so offensive to any non-involved party, but I guess it doesn’t really matter.
Where does RCG go with repros from here? Don’t know, but I’m gonna put ’em on the back burner for a bit while I rethink the process of producing, licensing, marketing, etc.
cheers,
wiggy

I’m sad to hear this.
I am a huge collector of official zelda games (US, JPB etc). And normally mods aren’t in my collection. But what you have created is a true fan art masterpiece.
I don’t see it as a ripoff, as nintendo doesn’t make money off of the physical carts anymore and it is a game mod. But a true testament to fandom.

I think you should still sell them.
Someone is going to get butthurt somewhere over anything anyone else does. It is the internet after all.
Obvious care and passion went into them, and I think you should deal with Nintendo giving a shit only when you need to cross that bridge.
Or just set a price for them on your site/mailing list.

Which sucks. Because obviously we all know they are REPROs and there are LOTS of Repro’s out on the market. People want them and want to play them on the real system to have an Authentic feel.
No one mistakenly thinks these are REAL Nintendo Products(Especially for the SNES).
And it’s not like they were Mass Produced. It’s just a limited thing that takes a LOT of effort and time to do for fans from fans.
Sucks some kid in the class has to come in and ruin everything for everyone else.
Any chance you can just sell them directly here for those who want them?

Dude, go for it. Haters gonna hate.
My motto is, “If they don’t have your back, they can suck on ya sack.”
Besides, people want them, anyone who thinks they can dictate whats “acceptable” can jump of a bridge.
Create a donation thing here, so if people want to help fund a donorless pcb, or a custom cartridge, they can.

If anything, Nintendo should be thanking guys like you, the people over at Starmen.net (for doing the Earthbound 2 translation), and others that are making retro systems and games cool again. If that weren’t for you, people (like me!) who grew up on these systems wouldn’t buy a Wii or DS in the hopes that those systems will even slightly resemble the experience we had at a younger age.
And yes, this marks the start of my campaign for Reggie’s job : )

As always, stay tuned. There will be updates 😉

LOL! Well, Reggie 2.0, thanks for the support!
I have a really hard time believing that repros, especially on the scale that I’m talking about producing, have a negative impact on anything that Nintendo does, no matter what all the self-appointed Internet police say.
I also hate when people liken repro making to burning a DVD, especially in light of the work that I did. Give me a break! Are these people blind?! First there’s the investment in the equipment to flash the ROMs, then the price of the chips, which, needless to say, is far greater than that of DVD-Rs, original hand-drawn and rendered artwork, custom hand-made packaging, etc. I spent countless hours on these sets. It’s beyond insulting and ignorant.
I’m far from the first to offer the service, and I sure won’t be the last, and if you look at what people are selling these same games for on eBay right now, you’ll see that my price for the sets was far from unreasonable. There are copies of Parallel worlds for sale right now with BIN prices that are more than half of what I was asking for the sets, effectively making them MORE expensive per game. That’s fine. I’m not saying that I have a problem with that, but rather that I was only asking 250 per set and I had a ton more invested into the games. I was selling MY work and time investment, which was considerable.
Anyways, I’m ranting at this point.

I was really looking forwards to these reproduction carts. I do not see how they could ever anger or upset anyone. What you made is a piece of art 😀 scratch that its more than that those were a revolution of craftsmen ship xD and no one should throw out incessant and arrogant insults. I really think you should continue the auctions for these carts. You put allot of time into those, don’t let random internet users impact the progression of this investment!

Sorry, but I don’t get it. You probably can’t / won’t be able to elaborate but what exactly was the problem with you doing this? Also, why let a small minority ruin all your hard work? Surely you wouldn’t be doing this if there were legal ramifications for you.
I don’t have the money floating around for these, but if I did I’d definitely be after one.

I’m not sure why you’re shelving them. Of COURSE there were going to be people pointing out legal issues with these, how could you not have seen that? But the point is that it’s the sort of weird legal issues that no one actually cares about. Could Nintendo shut you down? Sure? But would they? Not likely. To get people hyped up and then pull back and say “nah, too much negativity” is remarkably immature.
And to those who say “no one would ever confuse these for actual Nintendo-created games” you clearly don’t know how some people can be. There are people out there who are convinced that Secret of Mana 2 was officially released in NA because they saw carts and boxes for it on eBay. There will be dummies out there thinking Parallel Worlds and Goddess of Wisdom are just super rare SNES games that somehow no one knows about. I’ve already encountered people who actually think Parallel Worlds is official, so carts of it would only compound the issue. Not that I actually care (and I should point out that I don’t care and would rather that and to be able to purchase a fan-made cart than not at all) but it’s ignorant to say that it wouldn’t become an issue.

Nintendo’s primary issue with something like this is (and why they have no qualms with shutting down fan-made stuff that gets big enough) is that they don’t want people to get confused with what is and is not a Nintendo-made product. To us, it might be obvious that Parallel Worlds and Goddess of Wisdom are fan-made hacks of A Link to the Past, but the world is filled with morons, unfortunately. I’ve already encountered plenty of people on Zelda forums who think Parallel Worlds was some Japanese-only official game that got a fan translation. Having it on an actual cart is going to only increase the misunderstanding. So why is this an issue for Nintendo? Because if a fan game sucks (not saying that Parallel Worlds does) and is mistaken even by one person for a Nintendo-made product, that reflects poorly on Nintendo. They’d rather have no fan games at all to prevent that possibility.
I also think it’s a bit odd that you didn’t try to contact those involved in the hack to see if they minded (they might very well have said: “No, do not put this on a cart, please) or if they requested that if you did that you price them such that you’re making no profit (because these hack communities are largely populated by the sort who would refuse to make a profit themselves and would view you as making a profit as contrary to that theme) or maybe they would (rightfully so) want a cut of that profit.
Yes, there are other people out there doing this as well, but that doesn’t make it legal. You had to have known that it wasn’t legal when you started. And you had to have known that at some point someone would point that out. So to back out now only after someone has pointed that out to you seems a bit odd to me. I’d just wait for the C&D from Nintendo if I were you.

There’s no need for me to further explain my decision. I haven’t harmed anyone by doing so and I feel that I’ve made my rationale clear enough.
Of course I saw the trolls coming, but not to the extent that they did and with so much fervor. I feel that it’s in MY best interest to but this sort of thing on the back burner for the time being. Should I have waited for the auctions to be pulled? Would that have been acceptable to you? I’m pretty sure they would have been pulled based on all the “reporting” that was going on by the trolls in question.
Immature? I would call it being cautious. It’s easy to say things like “Not likely” when there are zero potential repercussions for you. If you’d like to make of your own reproduction carts, sell them as you will, then sit and “wait for the C&D from Nintendo”, then go for it! I don’t recall soliciting any advice on the subject.
That said, do you have some grand plan for how I should offer these for sale and how do so without making people feel excluded?

I don’t have any intention of questioning your decision to put this stuff on hold, but reading the comments here and on the facebook links that led me here have painted a foggy picture at best of what exactly happened when you tried to put these up the first time? For someone who’s only just found out about this, what exactly happened, I’ve just heard a lot of talk about people “being butthurt” and talking about it such a way that it seems you had to be there to get what they’re referring to specifically.
